It wasn’t an earthquake…but it was. Not much can shake me. I’m a small cave made of stone—not the little stones that kids pick up and skip across a pond; but the BIG ones that no one can make, and no one can move by themselves. As I said, that night, it wasn’t an earthquake, and yet, I felt it shaking everything. What happened in my cave that night moved the whole earth…

Muhtemelen beni fark etmedin.

You probably haven’t noticed me. I’ve been around for a long time and I’m sure you’ve seen me. I live in the constellation called, “Pisces,” but I’m not the brightest star…just one of the millions of stars you see when the sky is clear and there aren’t too many lights from the city blocking the view. I’m one of those stars you see, but don’t notice. That’s the way it is for most of us up here above your world—but there are exceptions. I will never forget the night of the biggest exception in all celestial history…

You might think my life in the corner of this cave is boring, but it’s not. There’re always the animals to watch and listen to. The donkey complains about everything and the cow moos softly to calm us down. The best part of my day is when I get picked up and taken to the well. A young girl comes and pours my old water into a trough for the animals. Then she puts me up high on her head for our trip to the well. Today, as soon as we stepped out of the cave, something felt very different…

I love looking up at the sky as my friends and I are pushed back and forth by the wind. That’s the advantage of being a long piece of straw. If you’re roots are deep, you can enjoy the feel of a good strong breeze bending you back and forth. Of course, I know I won’t be here forever. Men will come and cut us down to make bread or feed the animals. It’s ok. It’s why we were planted. I just hope they don’t come too soon…

I know I don’t look like much—just a long piece of plain cloth, but I think I have an important job in this house. The lady of the house uses me to clean things, to dry them off, to make them shine. She even uses me to wrap things tight, so they don’t break. My hardest wrapping job is to be wrapped around someone’s arm or leg when they’re bleeding. It’s messy and it stains me a bit. Still, to me it’s worth it, because when I’m wrapped tight around someone’s wound, I’m know I’m helping them get better.

Some people call me a box—but I don’t have a lid, and I’m really quite heavy. Like the walls of this cave, I’m made of stone. I hold things. Mostly I hold food for sheep, donkeys and cows. So, it’s a good thing I’m made out of stone because when the animals get hungry, they drool—all over me!!! And then I start smelling bad. Thankfully, the owner’s little boy cleans me out once a week. He’s supposed to come today. I hope he doesn’t forget…

Before I tell you about tonight, let me tell you about today. For most of the day, nothing looked particularly unusual, but I could feel the vibrations…footsteps, people and animal footsteps—more than usual. The animals felt it too. They were nervous, but they didn’t know why. The donkey complained more than usual and even kicked my stone wall! The owner came out to see what had happened. He patted the donkey and told him to calm down. It was only a bunch of people returning to their hometown.

As I told you, I’m not the brightest star in the sky, but I am an old star; and very far away. Actually, it amazes me that you can see me at all. Scientists say I’m about 1,625 light years away from your world. That means I’m not just far away in space, but also in time. What I see in your world now, actually happened 1,625 years ago! I’ve seen a lot of your history, from dinosaurs to floods and famine. But the one event I can never forget is that night of the Biggest Celestial Exception!

That day WAS different! Balanced on top of the young girl’s head I could see a lot more girls than usual walking to the well with water jugs on their heads. My young girl noticed it too. I’m sure, because she kept turning her head, left and right. When we got to the well there were water pots I’d never seen before. They had different designs as if they’d come from different places. Why would they come here? Our town is small, not very important, except a long time ago one of our kings was born here…

I’m glad yesterday was such a beautiful day. The sun was bright and golden, just like the tall stalks of grain around me. I felt like the warmth of the sun was calling my flower grains to burst out of their shells. I saw a farmer walk through the field and break the seed head off the top of one of my friends down the row. The farmer rubbed it in his hands and smiled. It must be time…

So far, today has been a hard day. Everyone in the house has been busy getting ready for guests. The lady of the house used me to clean the guest room. Then she washed me and hung me up in the kitchen to dry. Around 2:00 a family arrived with their 4 children. The youngest was a wild boy. He ran around outside, climbing and jumping on everything. Suddenly, I heard a scream. Someone came and grabbed me and before I knew it, my newly washed, cloth was being soaked in blood as I was wrapped around the boy’s head. His mother came and cradled him and me in her arms. Slowly he stopped crying. The mother peeked under my layers and softly said, “Baby, you’ll be all right. It’s not bleeding anymore.” I guess it hasn’t been such a bad day, even though it was hard. I hope the lady of the house can get the blood stain out..

Pekâlâ, bugünü yarıladık ve sahibimin oğlu, henüz yem konan bölümümü temizlemeye gelmedi. Koku can sıkıcı bir hale geliyor.

Well, we’re halfway through today and the owner’s son hasn’t come to clean my trough yet. The smell is getting embarrassing. Even the donkey is walking away from the leftovers. And I don’t like rats coming and eating the scraps because they smell worse than the donkey’s drool! I noticed when the girl came and brought back the water jug from the well, she hurried out faster than usual. I bet it’s the smell. I wish the boy would come. He’s almost never late. Something must have happened…but what?

Pazar yerleri doluydu. Evler de öyleydi. Çocuk muhtemelen misafirlere yardım etmekle meşguldü. Onun hava kararmadan önce gelip yemliği temizleyeceğine ve taze samanla dolduracağına emindim. Sonra, hepimiz sakin bir geceye dikkatimizi verebilirdik…

The smell was getting to me too! I like my cave to be clean! I knew why the boy was late in coming to clean the feeding trough. From the top of my highest rock, I can see the whole town. Like the water jug said, a lot of people were coming to our town. The markets were full! So were the houses. The boy was probably busy helping with the guests. I was sure he would come before dark, clean out the trough and fill it with fresh straw. Then we could all settle down to a quiet night…

It wasn’t dark yet, and so, you couldn’t see me. During your day, I see the other side of your world where it’s still night. That night (before your night), on the other side of the world, was a world very much like the one you know…but different. That side of the world has different mountains and seas. It has different people; but like you, they are sometimes happy, sometimes sad. Sometimes, like you, they are waiting for something, something better, something they need. I didn’t know what it was they needed…until that night on your side of the world…

Even from a distance I could tell the man needed water. Our owner knew it too. I saw him run to the stranger and call for his daughter to get some water. The girl ran to me with a cup, filled it quickly and gave it to the man who was approaching our cave with the owner. Our owner apologized that he couldn’t offer him a place to stay for the night. The stranger smiled and said he had relatives nearby. The water was all he needed to finish his journey. As I watched the two men walk back to the road I thought, “Our owner is really a very kind man!”

I was right. Today was the day. In the field I was both excited and scared. I knew it might hurt a bit to be cut from my roots, but I also knew that we’d be together. All of us pieces of straw would support each other…we always had. When the harvesters got to my row, I braced myself—and then it was over. My friends and I were gathered together and carried to the cave and thrown into one big pile. I’m glad I was on top so I could see what was coming next.

After the bleeding stopped, the lady of the house unwrapped me from around the boy’s head. As his mother continued to hold him and sing to him, my mistress dumped me in cold water and scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed! I thought she was going to scrub a hole in me, but she didn’t. And when the scrubbing was over, you could barely see the blood spot where the boy’s mother had pressed me tight against her son’s head. For the second time that day, I was hung up in the kitchen to dry and wait for my next “adventure.”

The sun was almost down when the boy, his sister and his father came rushing in and started pouring water over me, scrubbing me with soap, pouring more water, then scrubbing again. I’d never felt so clean in my life! I wondered why they scrubbed me so hard, and in such a hurry. Then I heard our owner say, “I’m sure it won’t happen here, but just in case…”

I heard what the owner said, but I couldn’t figure out what he meant until I saw the couple and their donkey. The husband looked worried and the wife looked tired—and very much like she was about to have her baby! Our owner apologized for the accommodations as he led them to my cave. My cave…where donkey’s brayed and cows mooed, water was carried, straw stored and smelly feeding troughs were finally cleaned. My cave was the place this poor woman was going to have her baby? It didn’t seem right…and yet, it was…perfect. I almost cried.

I never thought that people needed a concert, but they did—and that’s what they got! Just as the sun was setting, a bright and blazing star appeared in my constellation. It was the Biggest Celestial Exception! It was so bright! And each ray of light around it seemed to be pointing to one place on earth, one small, tiny holy place. The heavens beyond our heaven burst into song above that tiny place, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

There was so much noise and confusion! The husband helped his wife off of the donkey. She was having trouble standing so he made a bed out of the straw that had been brought in that day. The lady of the house came in with clean cloths. The young woman was crying out in pain. Then suddenly she stopped, and I heard another cry. It was the strongest, sweetest cry I’d ever heard. Someone grabbed me quickly and started pouring my water over that wriggling cry. I saw Him! My water washed Him! And I felt clean.

Her şeyi gördüm.

I expected to be part of the first batch to be thrown into the feeding trough. But then this young couple came in and immediately the husband started pulling down heaps of straw and throwing it on the ground! I slid down with the others, but not quite to the ground. Soon I understood why he had done that. His wife was having a baby and she needed a soft place to lie down. I saw it all. I don’t know how to explain it. The baby was so tiny, and yet so big inside.

Son maceram teyzenin mutfağa koşup, beni ve eski diğer bezleri alıp mağaraya götürmesiyle başladı. Orada bir bebeği tutan genç bir kadın samandan bir yatakta yatıyordu! Teyze bebeği diğer bezlerden biriyle kuruladı. Önce O ağladı, sonra teyze beni O’nun etrafına sarıp annesinin kollarına yerleştirdiğinde, O sakinleşti. Açıklaması zor ama, O’nu tamamıyla sıkıca sıkıştırdığımda, O’nun, Sevgisiyle beni sardığını hissettim.

My final adventure began when the lady of the house ran into the kitchen, grabbed me and some other old cloths and took us to the cave. There a young woman was lying on a bed of straw holding a baby! The lady of the house dried the baby off with one of the other cloths. First, He cried, then quieted down when she wrapped me around Him and placed Him back in His mother’s arms. It’s hard to explain, but as I squeezed myself tightly around Him, I felt like He was wrapping His love around me.

Her şeyi duydum; ama anlamadım. Çobanlar bebeği görmeye geldiler ve parlak ışıklar, melekler, Kurtarıcılar ve Krallar hakkında konuştular. Neler oluyordu?

I heard it all but didn’t understand. Shepherds came to see the baby and talked about bright lights, angels, Saviors and Kings. What was going on? And why was my feeding trough empty? Then someone threw fresh straw into my box. It felt good, but not as good as when they placed the baby on top of the straw, in the heart of my trough. Then I understood. I was holding eternity; something that always was and always will be; something that never changes, but changes everything. That night this cave was His palace and my feeding trough His throne.

(6) Onlar oradayken, Meryem’in doğurma vakti geldi.

Luke 2:4-14 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, (5) to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. (6) And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. (7) And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. (8) And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. (9) And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. (10) And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (12) And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." (13) And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, (14) "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!"
